As the UK’s leading institution for large-scale ocean research, NOC delivers vital insight into our changing seas. Our long-term scientific capability provides a solid foundation that supports national priorities and informs policy with trusted, evidence-based knowledge.
We work closely with partners across academia, industry, and government, both in the UK and internationally, to enhance society’s understanding of the ocean. By fostering inclusive, sustained engagement, NOC ensures marine science remains accessible, impartial, and aligned with the needs of both decision-makers and the public.
NOC serves as a collaborative hub for research organisations and external partners, delivering world-class science through the National Marine Equipment Pool (NMEP), multiple National Capability centres, and specialist expertise across diverse research areas.
We support UK-wide networks that connect government departments, public bodies, academia, research institutes, and industry. These networks are vital for sharing knowledge and strengthening our collective understanding of the ocean.
Maintaining political neutrality, NOC leverages its scientific and technological expertise to conduct research that supports sound decision-making for ocean and climate benefit. We also champion global observation networks and international scientific collaboration to increase understanding.

NOC represents the UK in over 100 international programmes, including IOC-UNESCO, the International Seabed Authority, G7 Future of the Seas and Oceans Initiative, and the European Marine Board, helping build global capacity to tackle ocean challenges.
We collaborate closely with developing nations to address global scientific challenges, supporting food and energy security, employment, and climate resilience worldwide.
Oceanography is inherently global. NOC’s strong partnerships across countries enrich science impact, provide access to facilities and data, and promote excellence through training, knowledge exchange, and international collaboration.

NOC is a world-leading oceanographic centre employing over 650 people. We offer outstanding opportunities for talented individuals from diverse backgrounds, both UK-based and international, to collaborate and drive high-impact research.
